ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL NETWORK DEFENDES YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND CREATION OF SUSTAINABILITY RANKING
The 1st International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals took place on October 13th in Seia, Portugal, in the scope of the 24th edition of the Serra da Estrela International Environmental Film Festival. This Forum was attended by more than 100 participants, including 36 film festival directors from the Green Film Network (GFN) from 30 countries, brought together to make a difference and contribute to the promotion of environmental cinema in the world. Empowering youth through environmental education, promoting a sustainable lifestyle and creating a ranking of sustainability were some of the preliminary ideas that emerged from this meeting.
The 1st International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals, which took place on October 13th at the CISE Auditorium (Serra da Estrela Center of Interpretation) in Seia (Portugal), underscored the importance of the annual meeting of members of the Green Film Network (GFN) in the sense of sharing experiences, discussing and reflecting on the role and projection of environmental cinema around the world.
In a pioneering initiative of CineEco, organized by the Municipality of Seia, with the support of the Green Film Network and Turismo Centro de Portugal, in this 1st Forum were expressed ideas almost transversal to all the directors and directors of the Environmental Film Festivals represented.
First of all, it is consensual to note the difficulties of funding the organization of Environmental Film Festivals, these being circumvented with occasional sponsorships and with support given by some patrons. In addition to the cinematographic divulgation, the Environmental Cinema has been a primordial instrument in the promotion of the environmental education to schools around the world and in the formation of citizens more enlightened in the environmental level, in the sense of being able to allow the defense of a common good the humanity.
In the context of maximizing the impact of environmental film festivals in their countries of origin, the power to impacts the general public as well as the political class to take concrete actions was equally consensual. Empowering youth to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and the creation of a ranking of sustainability were some basic ideas that resulted from this Forum. In this aspect, the availability of the World Bank to support young filmmakers and filmmakers based on the proliferation of a platform on the climate, in order to influence political decisions in a positive way.
The participants of the 1st Forum of Environmental Film Festivals also recognized that the communication of science is currently a key element in the clarification of populations and, together with some environmental film festivals, allows to rebut and sustain contradictory perplexities, often based on some dogmas .
Present at this Forum were representatives from the UN Department of Environment, Unesco, National Geographic and an indigenous leader, who reinforced their communications on the importance of cinema as a support tool in promoting environmental values.
